Food has always brought people together, crossing boundaries of culture and nationality, but it can also act as a comfort, and to help people retain their culture. Refugees who have had no choice but to flee their countries seek to maintain their cultural roots, and in doing so have consequently educated Britain and shared with us some of their fantastic foods.
To celebrate the culinary delights that diversity has brought us, acclaimed Chef Levi Roots has lent his expertise to the first ever World Food Night, which will take place on Feb 24. World Food Night will see people across the UK cooking up a variety of global dishes in an effort to aid Refugee Action, a charity that works to advise and support refugees in the UK.
To help raise awareness of the hardships facing today’s refugees, participate in this international food fundraiser. It’s as simple as hosting a dinner party with family and friends and asking for donations to a great cause.
If the thought of cooking foreign food terrifies you, fear not. Roots is aiding the effort with exotic recipe ideas, tips and giveaways, all of which will be sent to participants to help them in their culinary adventure across the globe. There will also be prizes awarded to those who raise the most money, like an indulgent meal at Levi’s London restaurant, Papine.
So go ahead, spin a globe, close your eyes, and see what country you land on. There has never been a better time to try something new. Cook for a change!
