Pancake Day is not a holiday to be flippant about. Yes, we made a pan – pun…but seriously, this is the day you are supposed to use up what’s in your cupboards -flour, eggs and milk (of course), and eat your bodyweight in pancakes before you fast for 40 days! You must not take this delicious day half-heartedly, you have some serious decisions to make: what are you going to give up for 40 days and nights, and more importantly, where are you going to get your pancakes from?!
Fear not – Blue Tomato are more than equipped to help you out with your decisions. First of all, give up nothing and do something extra instead, like follow us on twitter. Secondly, see below the best places to get your pancake fix around London this Shrove Tuesday!
Fluffy and Free: Breakfast is great when you don’t have to cook it, and it’s even better when it’s free. In Marylebone Village between 9-11am on Shrove Tuesday, contemporary restaurant ONE08 will be serving up free pancakes to those enjoying their morning coffee or tea. Pancakes will be served traditional style, accompanied by sugar and lemon. Afternoon and evening guests will be treated to a free pancake dessert.
Fancy Flapjacks: Opt for something stylish this Pancake Day and tuck into a unique selection of crêpe creations. The Botanist on Sloane Square and Chiswell Street Dining Rooms in the City will be flipping a wide range of pancakes all day, from American blueberry style for breakfast to a crêpe made with poppy seeds and filled with foie gras, wild mushrooms and a cauliflower purée for dinner. If you decide to go for the pancake dessert or treat yourself to the Champagne and Crêpe Afternoon Tea, expect lots of sweet choices. ;
Shrove Sushi: Skip the traditional and go for something Japanese this Pancake Day. Yo! Sushi will be offering diners a complimentary dessert with a £5 purchase on Feb 21, called a Dorayaki—a combination of two traditionally prepared Japanese pancakes with a lemon custard filling. This dessert is a limited edition, so be sure to save room for it after indulging in your choice of over 90 dishes from the food belt. Visit the website to claim the voucher.
Pancake Pub: If you were planning on spending Shrove Tuesday in a pub, it turns out you can have your drink and eat pancakes, too. The Water Poet in Spitalfields has a special menu for Pancake Day that includes traditional options like lemon and sugar pancakes, as well as untraditional options like spinach, mushroom and ricotta pancakes. And if that doesn’t do it for you, look for the incredible booze inspired options. Apple and cinnamon pancakes with Aspall cider syrup, anyone? The menu will be served from midday until 9 p.m.
Competitive Crêpes: If you adore French-style crêpes and like winning prizes, it only makes sense to head to Crêpeaffair on Shrove Tuesday. The café, which will be extending its opening hours for the holiday, is hosting a pancake tossing competition on Feb. 21 at its Westfield Stratford City location from 2-5 p.m. Crêpeaffaire hopes to break the Guinness World Record for number of tosses in two minutes, and one lucky helper will win free crêpes for a year. If flipping flapjacks isn’t your thing, however, there is another way to win a year of free crêpes. Take a guess at how many pancakes the Crêpeaffaire branches will sell on Pancake Day and email andrea@crepeaffaire.com with your name, address, phone number and answer. The competition runs for now until Tuesday, Feb. 21 at midnight.
Plenty at Plateau: Plateau, Canary Wharf’s original fine dining venue is offering a delicious dessert of pancakes with citrus sauce and lemon sorbet for just £7.50.
No excuses – get indulging whilst you still can!
