Calorie shmalorie! Who cares when it’s glazed?!
There’s doughnuts, and then there’s Krispy Kremes, and before I start drooling over my keyboard whilst I liken the taste of a Krispy Kreme to something not far from heavenly, wrap your brain around these fantastic facts.
Ever heard of a Krispy Kreme Hotlight store? Well it’s only my favourite store in the world! The geniuses behind Krispy Kreme always enter a market with a Hotlight store that is able to then serve up to four coffee bars and thirty (yes, 30) in-store cabinets in its surrounding area. For doughnut lovers, a Krispy Kreme Hotlight store is a dream come true. Each one features an appropriately named, unique, ‘Doughnut Theatre’, where the process to deliciousness is carried out right before your very eyes. There are 10 Hotlight stores in the UK currently producing an absolutely staggering 1 million doughnuts every week. And I genuinely believe Blue Tomato are responsible for consuming half of those…
The coffee bars, kiosks and in-store cabinets get their doughnuts fresh every morning from the nearest H-store, thanks to a skilled team that work through the night to hand-finish each and every one, from hand-dipping the doughnuts in the icings to sprinkling and piping the decorative finishes.
There are already 46 stores in the UK and a gobsmacking (or rather gobfilling) 400 other outlets from which you can purchase these doughy delights (e.g. Tesco), and they only want to grow further, with a plan to open 10 more stores next year.
So what is it about these rounded, peculiarly holey treats that makes us forget about the ol’ calorie consumption, order of a cup of coffee and tuck right in?
You could be walking past a store on the other side of the road and be drawn in just by the smell. The fresh dough; that familiar, warm smell we are all guilty of loving (that’s the smell of something being fried); the sweet smell of that white icing waterfall coaxing the doughnuts in. Before you know it you’re right there, staring at them!
Then there’s the look – all lined up, beautifully, perfectly decorated, glistening behind the glass. And not long after the look, there’s the taste. The number one favourite Krispy Kreme is the OG – the Original Glaze, but have you tried it hot? If you can’t get to a Hotlight store that will swing one your way hot off the belt then take your treasure home and give it a blast in the microwave. Oh My Glaze.
