As all of us wine aficionados know, there is always more to learn. There are the technical aspects of winemaking, the cultural stories, and the elusive mysteries that surround the wine and the land it comes from. Oh, and how to tell a Merlot from a Cabernet with a blindfold on.
If you’re more of a taster than a reader, toss the books. There’s a new way you can get a wine education. For the summer of 2012 from August 11th to the 17th, the Oxford Wine Academy will be offering a five-day “Summer School” course in Oxford’s Exeter College. James Flewellen and Dr Neel Burton, both celebrated wine experts, will be teaching the courses by giving a series of lectures and tutored tastings of global wines to allow participants to better train their palates. Classes include the History of Wine, Elements of Wine, White Wines of the World, Champagne Tasting and more, finishing the course off with a blind tasting competition, a fun way for participants can put their newly-learned skills to the test.
If you just can’t wait until summer comes, the Oxford Wine Academy is also hosting intensive taster courses on February 25th, March 10th and March 11th. These courses are three-hours long and include guided tastings of six fine wine samples, also at Exeter College in Oxford. There is a morning course from 10am to 1pm and an afternoon course from 3-5pm on each date, and the cost is £99 per person.
To book your spot at an Intensive Taster Course or to sign up for the “Summer School”, email info@theoxfordwineacademy.com. For more information, visit the academy’s website.
