McGuigan Get Real

This is an excerpt from Terry Theise’s Reading Between the Wines,

‘…oh, just a portrait of nasturtium, or shuttlecocks dipped in quince jelly, or the stench on a fox’s muzzle after he’s eaten a number of small rodents or the iced cake in a refrigerator in a Paris apartment, or like new sandals, especially if the feet in them have been soaked in a bromide solution…’

Excuse me? Is it any wonder that many of us find choosing our wine so intimidating when the tasting notes are, more often than not, complete and utter nonsense? McGuigan Wine – the world-famous Australian Wine Brand, have acknowledged our desperate cries for help coming from wine aisles all over Britain and have come to make the lives of winos everywhere easier.

This month, McGuigan have re-launched their McGuigan Classic range in the UK with new labels that are designed to make shopping for wine less daunting. Phew!

After some extensive research which included blind tasting over 1,000 lucky volunteers across 5 UK cities, the Aussie wine producer found that us Brits do know our stuff when it comes to wine! 77% of those surveyed were able to identify the key fruit notes and characteristics in a glass of wine, whilst nearly a third, when prompted, could even identify the specific wine type.

So here we are trying to decode all the lardeedar, incoherent tasting notes, when all along we could’ve just trusted our mate Jim who told us it was nice, tastes a bit like berries, and goes well with beef!

To put the fun back into wine drinking, McGuigan Wine have created a series of ‘real’ tasting notes from real people – just like Jim. Each of the wines in the re-launch range now has a video tasting note with members of the public sharing their own, unique (and quite amusing) interpretations of the McGuigan Classic range.

We tried the Merlot which was (you can quote us) very smooth and plummy, and the Sauvignon Blanc, which we found citrusy, zesty, and resfreshing.

All seven varietals will appear on the shelf with a simple label that uses just three words to describe the style, texture, and fruit notes within the bottle, so customers can know whether or not it’s the wine for them at a glance – basically making us all look like pros!
