New Wine School to Launch in East London

Throw away your pencils and textbooks. School just got a little cooler.

The East London Wine School will be opening for courses this January, so you can start the New Year with some brand new knowledge. The school will offer eight-week courses with an emphasis on enjoying and appreciating wines, as well as learning about the different wine regions and the characteristics of each. It will also offer introductory evening tastings, Saturday champagne tastings with lunch, and fine wine evenings.

The school’s after-work tastings are for everyone, from those with little wine experience to the serious devotees. Best of all, they are reasonably priced (the eight-week course runs at less than £25 per evening including the cost of wine), so you’ll have a great time and learn a little something without breaking the bank.

The first 8-week introductory course beginning on January 12th is World Tour of Wine, a focus on the major varieties of grapes in the world and the styles of wine that they produce. And for something this side of the New Year, try the Christmas Wine Tasting, a special holiday session on Tuesday December 6th at 7pm, which will feature a range of carefully selected wines paired with samples of traditional Christmas dishes.

The director of the East London Wine School, Ian Bentley, is a wine expert with over 20 years of experience in the food and drink industry. His classes are sure to be full of useful information, and we have shared a few of Ian’s wine tips to get you started.

  • Don’t drink wine too cold – you can kill the flavours and aromas
  • Look again at Old World producers – a lot of exciting wine is now coming out of Spain, Italy and the Languedoc as younger producers rise to the challenge of the New World
  • Invest in some good glasses with a shape which captures the aroma – ISO type glasses are good, and you will get more from the wine
  • Drink wine when it is young – very few wines benefit from ageing, and most wine is designed to be consumed within a year or two of harvest
  • Experiment with different wines – there is such a range of flavours and styles it is a pity to stick with what you know
