16″ West Brasserie

16 seconds

Though I have not counted for myself, so obviously could not possibly be sure, 16″ West Brasserie is named as such due to its meticulously exact location – sixteen seconds from the Greenwich Meridian line. Only opening July of last year, this new kid on the block is a particularly welcome addition to Greenwich and so perfectly suited to the scene that it’s difficult to understand why it has only just come about.

Situated in the Sammy Ofer Wing of the National Maritime Museum, the brasserie’s decor is minimalistic – and I love it. A cool mix of concrete and glass, the restaurant is bright and airy, with simple table decorations consisting of tumblers filled with acorns and leaves; the outdoors has been brought indoors, and I’m a nature girl.

Overlooking Greenwich Park, the views from inside the restaurant are lovely, but can also be enjoyed from a table on their alfresco terrace which was chockablock throughout the summer, as you can imagine.

The style of food reflects the design of the restaurant with each dish presented looking fresh and botanically coloured, and evidence of their belief in using striving to use only organic and fair trade produce. The British menu is divided into small plates and large plates, and although the small plates may perhaps seem a little pricey, each dish is pleasantly inventive and of  generous proportions.

The brasserie is complimented by an extensive drinks menu that offers a wine list, encompassing classic varieties and the best of the new age, as well as the finest local beers, ales and ciders. All of the staff are very knowledgeable and passionate about the pairings of food and drink and happy to advise.

Whilst I am looking forward to visiting the restaurant again in the summer, to enjoy the alfresco terrace with my mum (she’ll love it), I am also looking forward to stopping by for a tasty lunch and glass of vino, before taking a stroll around the park this spring.
