Although perhaps easily overlooked due to its discreet location on a side street in Mayfair, 5 Pollen Street is an Italian restaurant that should not be ignored.
On entering, the first thing I noticed was the newly old-fashioned, striking interior. Having seen pictures previous to visiting the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised at just how well the low ceilings, quaint chandeliers and quirky artwork complimented the space. It felt intimate – but not intimidating, and seems to me like quite an ideal location for Valentines. (Hint, hint.)
The menu was extensive, consisting of a choice of characteristic modern Italian dishes. To start, we chose the Peppercorn Seared Tuna and Fennel Salad with an Orange Dressing. The tuna was perfectly pink in colour and spicy, giving it a wicked kick.
We also tried the Wild Mushrooms, Quail Eggs and Melted Toma Cheese – a generously portioned dish with mushrooms that were delectably fresh and quail eggs that were a genius addition to both the flavour and the appearance. On the whole this starter had a very rustic feel.
Try as I might to avoid opting for typical Italian dishes such as Mushroom or Seafood Risotto, the Risotto with Monkfish and Mussels that 5 Pollen Street had to offer sounded much too tempting to dismiss. Whilst I was excited by the prospect of a Risotto with a difference, I was slightly disappointed as there was a little too much lemon resulting in the dish being far too bitter.
The Venison, however, was a delicious and aesthetically pleasing dish and came with potatoes that were crunchy with fluffy insides – just right.
Overall, 5 Pollen Street had a buzzing atmosphere (you can permit me one bee joke), good service and some great grub, and although it clings to some bold Mayfair prices, it is definitely worth a visit.
